Applications are now open for the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Fellowship 2027 in Japan. This fully funded fellowship offers researchers a unique opportunity to advance their professional careers while engaging with a global network of intellectuals to critically analyze and address pressing world challenges. Fellows will spend 2 to 6 months in Japan deepening their subject knowledge and developing comprehensive approaches to issues in their fields of interest.
About the Fellowship
Established in 1979, the Matsumae International Foundation was created to attract highly qualified researchers and strengthen collaborative ties between Japan and the rest of the world. The MIF Fellowship introduces overseas researchers to Japanese history, philosophy, and culture while supporting talented individuals in broadening their understanding of Japan. Through this program, Japan continues its commitment to fostering peaceful, trustworthy relationships across nations — a mission rooted in its own post-war journey toward lasting peace.

Eligibility Criteria
- Open to all non-Japanese nationals
- Must hold a PhD degree
- Must be 45 years old or younger
- Must provide an invitation/acceptance letter from a Japanese host institution
- Proficiency in English or Japanese is required
- No previous experience living or working in Japan
- Must be currently employed in their home country and committed to returning upon completion of the fellowship
- Preference given to applicants in natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and agriculture
